Do you know what you are eating?
It’s no doubt that we live in a polluted world and that our choices to live a clean and wholesome life has become a hard challenge indeed. Food additives and preservatives have been used for centuries to enhance not only the appearance of food but also to enhance flavour and prolong shelf life.
However, the case remains that these additives do not really “add” any value to your health. It seems the only benefit is for the food manufacturers as products can be made, packaged and shipped without getting spoilt and without losing money. In fact, all those “additives” according to our customers, take away the natural taste of food. When we react or our bodies can’t tolerate them we feel ill without knowing why.
The mission to move to a 100% chemical free store may seem impossible now, but unless we start reducing our chemical and toxin intake we won’t ever be able to optimize our longevity and health. We certainly believe that this clean-up of our food system is possible and we will pursue this aim with vigor.
What are preservatives?
A preservative is a substance or a chemical that is added to products such as food, beverages, pharmaceutical drugs, paints, biological samples, cosmetics, wood, and many other products to prevent decomposition by microbial growth or by undesirable chemical changes. Some preservatives are chemically processed while others are natural substances. Some preservatives are worse than others and we need to learn about which ones pose the greatest threat to our immune systems.
Why are preservatives bad for our health?
Numerous studies from universities and health care institutions throughout the world have concluded that highly processed foods, that contains a high amount of chemically produced preservatives, can have a serious effect on our health.
Ultra-processed food, processed meats, and deli products contain preservatives and chemical additives in excess. These highly processed foods can cause cancerous cell growth and formation in your body. Cancer is the number one known harmful side effect of food preservatives.
To prevent your chances of ending up with a long list of heart conditions, strokes, and ailments, including increased blood pressure – that can be damaging to your blood vessels, a whole food approach is best. Processed foods, ready-made meals and/or convenient food is usually ladled with extra sugar and saturated fats.
When we do overindulge and make processed foods a daily occurrence on our plates, we will start craving more of it, because of the empty calories, with added sugar and fats. These chemicals in processed foods trigger us to need more of it. It’s called the “bliss level” where they optimize your taste buds to crave more through chemicals. Obesity is a sure side effect, from consuming too much of these processed fast foods. Isn’t it weird how sugary and refined carbohydrate-laden foods are the ones with the most toxins in them?
Most obvious, blood sugar fluctuations occur when we consume unnatural, processed and artificial sugars. The quantity of sugar in fizzy drinks, sweets, cakes, ready meals, and cereal are mind-blowing. Diabetes is one of the main side effects of nasty food preservatives. Our nutrient dense, grass-fed meats and dairy, contains healthy levels of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA’ s) and omega 3 fats are a far better option and will keep you energized even longer than sugar can. Always choose healthy fats like olive oils, avocado and healthy, veldt reared meat products.
With our gut microbiota being essentially the most important element for good health – overindulging in foods high in preservatives and additives, like most processed canned foods and ready-made meals, can diminish our healthy gut bacteria and lead to leaky gut syndrome and other gastrointestinal disorders. These 9 are on our worst list and you must avoid them.
The artificial sweetener found in more than 6000 known products is also known as an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins are a class of chemicals (usually amino acids) that overstimulate neuron receptors. You definitely want to avoid any products with this nasty ingredient as it is believed to be carcinogenic, and produces neurotoxic effects such as headaches, dizziness, blurry vision, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
MSG is one of the most common additives added to processed foods as a flavour enhancer. Regularly consuming excitotoxins like MSG destroys significant numbers of brain cells and can lead to serious health problems, including neurological disorders.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
It’s a highly processed sweetener derived from genetically modified corn starch and is also a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, arthritis, insulin resistance, and elevated triglycerides and raised LDL cholesterol. Not to mention the unhealthy calories it contains, affecting weight gain and obesity.
Artificial Food Colouring
Found in most candies, beverages, cereals, puddings, processed meats, condiments and baked goods – if your food does not contain the hue of natural colour, you can be guaranteed that the nasty artificial colouring in your food (Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, are contaminated with known carcinogens) are derived from petroleum. The best habit you can teach yourself is to read your labels and be aware of uncoded ingredients. We will provide more on this topic as some producers use different good-sounding terms for nasty ingredients. So it’s a mind field and we believe that any colourant or unknown colourants are best avoided.
Agave Nectar might be dubbed as healthy, but in fact, it is a highly processed sugar from the agave cactus plant that contains the highest amount of fructose. Fructose has been shown to increase blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, increasing your chances of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.
BHA and BHT
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are preservatives used in many foods to prevent oxidation and extend shelf life. Find these in cold meats, cereals, sausages, cosmetics, potato chips, factory made breads and more.
Refined Vegetable Oils
There are many varieties of refined, processed vegetable oils that is extremely harmful to our health because of the extreme chemical processes like bleaching and deodorizing. Avoid products that use margarine, peanut oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and corn oil.
Considered to be an endocrine disruptor, Bromate is used to give volume in baked goods like rolls, bread, loaves and flour. This additive is mostly banned in European Countries and is thought to be highly cancerous. In addition, it has been linked to confusing people to believe they are “gluten intolerant”, where in fact their bodies are reacting to the chemicals in the bread rather than the bread itself. A good testimony is that our Artisan bread (that are prepared without unknown ingredients and yeasts) don’t react in our so-called “gluten intolerant” customers. It really is tough to live without bread. Try a slice of our for free in our markets and you may be surprised that you, in fact, can eat “clean” bread. Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH)
This is a genetically-engineered version of the natural growth hormone produced by cows and is mainly given to cows to increase milk production. This creates a massive problem in dairy cows as this hormone increases the chance of mastitis, which in turns secretes pus and blood into the milk. Always look for dairy products that is labeled correctly: “No rBGH or rBST.” Our milks are all clean and free from these hormones.
